Intent
At Batley Parish, we believe every child deserves the chance to grow into a confident, caring, and resilient individual. Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum is at the heart of this journey, offering children the essential knowledge and skills they need to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and kindness. We don’t just teach our children about schoolwork; we teach them how to look after their emotional wellbeing, how to build healthy relationships, and how to stay safe, both online and in the real world.
We aim to:
- Provide a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, identity, relationships and the wider world.
- Teach key life skills such as resilience, empathy, critical thinking and communication.
- Promote physical and emotional wellbeing, personal safety and online safety.
- Teach about the Protected Characteristics (e.g. race, religion, disability, gender and family structure) to promote fairness and respect.
- Embed British Values such as democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and respect for others.
- Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can fully access the curriculum.
Our PSHE and RSE offer supports every child’s personal development and prepares them for life in modern Britain.
Implementation
Curriculum
- In Nursery, we follow the Jigsaw scheme, using themed lessons like Being Me, Healthy Me and Changing Me through stories, songs and circle time.
- From Reception to Year 6, we use Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE, which meets statutory guidance and includes areas like safety, relationships, citizenship and economic wellbeing.
- A responsive unit is taught each autumn in Years 1–6, with space to add extra lessons as needed to address local or class issues.

- Economic wellbeing
- Identity
How we teach
- PSHE links to other subjects such as Computing (e-safety), Science (health and puberty), and RE (beliefs and diversity).
- Lessons include stories, videos, role-play, discussion and debate.
- Children co-create ground rules to help them speak and listen respectfully.
- Floor books capture learning and pupil voice.
- Assessment sheets are used to track understanding.
- SEND pupils are supported through visuals, adapted tasks and additional adult support.
Engagement with Families
We work closely with parents and carers:
- Sharing yearly curriculum overviews and resources for sensitive topics like puberty.
- Holding meetings to explain content and answer questions.
- Consulting with families before teaching non-statutory sex education.
- Clearly explaining the right to withdraw from specific lessons in line with DfE guidance.
Inclusion, British Values and Equality
We actively teach children to recognise and respect diversity in all forms — including race, gender, religion, ability and family structure. This helps all children feel safe, valued and included.
We also promote British Values through:
- Class votes and school council elections
- Learning about rules, justice and fairness
- Understanding rights and freedoms
- Respecting people of different faiths, cultures and beliefs
Impact
We measure impact through assessment, pupil voice, staff feedback and leadership monitoring.
Assessment
- Teachers track progress through lesson objectives and end-of-unit tasks.
- Floor books show evidence of discussion and reflection.
- Learning is reviewed regularly to ensure it builds over time.
Outcomes
- Children develop emotional understanding and strong communication skills.
- They grow in confidence, learn how to stay safe and manage peer pressure.
- Pupils leave our school with a strong sense of identity, fairness and respect for others.
