PE

Intent

Through the teaching of Physical Education at Batley Parish CE Primary Academy School we aim to develop the children’s processes of collaboration, coordination, spatial awareness, physical skill, fitness and general wellbeing. The ultimate goal of this is to enable the children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives and to promote physical positive attitudes towards hygiene, fitness and health. We use, for all year groups, ‘Get Set 4 PE’ as part of a curriculum that plans sporting disciplines with careful consideration of progression of skills alongside an exposure to a repertoire of different sporting disciplines. Insightful videos and visual resources further aid children in their understanding of different sports.

We provide children with exposure to a variety of different sporting disciplines, including swimming, dance, gymnastics, athletics as well as racket and invasion games. We intend to provide all our children with opportunities to take part in intra-competitions, with additional inter-competitions for selected year groups. We believe that P.E. should give all of our children, regardless of ability, an enjoyable experience, which they will continue on into their adult lives.

In addition to this we use external specialist sports coaches that provide teaching to KS2 children. Alongside this there are a range of sporting clubs across the year that provide further opportunity to develop and embed skills that have been taught across the year.

We believe that through the variety of opportunities that PE offers, children can:

  • Develop a sense of personal achievement.
  • Understand fair play and teamwork.
  • Encourage children to express themselves throughout sport.
  • Develop improvisation and problem-solving skills..
  • Appreciate the importance of a healthy, fit body and why warm up, cool downs are so important.
  • Understand the factors which affect health and fitness.
  • Participate in clubs and extend their interest and involvement in sport out of school.
  • Learn fundamental skills that are transferable between activities.
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of being active in promoting long-term health and well-being.
  • Children are active throughout each PE Lesson and enjoy their lesson.
  • Be able to improve their own performance and develop the language and personal development skills to advise others on how they can improve their performance.
  • Develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
  • Develop leadership qualities.
  • Be able to swim 25m by the end of KS2.

Impact

Physical Education is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if it is taught well and the children are allowed to succeed and flourish, hopefully then they will continue to have a physically active life throughout their secondary education, and beyond. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport, builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness, respect, resilience, determination, passion and self belief.

The progress of children is monitored termly through Insight Tracking which is linked to the PE scheme from peplanning.org.uk which enables us to track every child through their years at Batley Parish and gives us insight into their performance and their needs.
